Confirmation

Confirmation is a sign that a person has reached maturity and is now able to take responsibility for their own faith. It also strengthens and deepens the connection to the Church that is established at baptism.

Preparing for Confirmation

Young people normally prepare for Confirmation through a parish-led programme that explores faith, prayer, and service. Sessions help candidates understand how the Holy Spirit works in their lives and in the Church.

Parents and sponsors are invited to be part of this journey, offering encouragement and support.

The sacrament of confirmation can be divided into four parts:

1

Presentation of the candidate – Those preparing for Confirmation are called forward by name and welcomed by the community as they take this important step in their faith journey.

2

Renewal of baptismal vows – Candidates publicly reaffirm the promises made at their baptism, expressing their desire to live as committed members of the Church.

3

Laying on of hands – The candidate kneels as the bishop calls upon the Holy Spirit. With a sponsor’s hand on their shoulder, the bishop places his hands on the candidate as a sign of God’s blessing and strength.

4

Anointing with chrism – The bishop anoints the candidate with sacred chrism, marking their forehead with the sign of the cross and saying, “Be sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.” He offers peace, which the candidate returns.

The Celebration

The Sacrament of Confirmation is usually celebrated by the Bishop or his delegate during Mass.

Candidates renew their baptismal promises, are anointed with the oil of Chrism, and receive the words: “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

It’s a joyful day for our parish family and a proud moment for parents, sponsors, and friends.
