Arranging a Funeral

When a loved one dies, your chosen funeral director will contact the parish office to agree a date and time for the funeral. Once everything is in place, Father John will get in touch to help you choose readings, hymns, and any other details. Most funerals are celebrated as a Requiem Mass, though a service can also be held at the crematorium or funeral home if that feels more fitting. Funerals are usually held on weekday mornings at 10 am, unless another time is agreed.

The Mass

A Catholic funeral is a moment of prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving for a life well lived.
  • Readings are chosen from Scripture and can be read by family or friends.

  • Music usually includes four hymns: Entrance, Offertory, Communion, and Recessional. (Recorded music can’t be played in church.)

  • A short eulogy may be shared after Communion.

  • During Communion, those who do not receive are warmly invited to come forward for a blessing – just cross your arms over your chest.

  • Two to four people may take part in the Offertory Procession, if you wish.

Other considerations

  • Flowers: You can arrange flowers through any florist. They may be placed on the coffin or in the sanctuary.

  • Donations: There is no charge for funerals. If you would like to contribute, a donation of £100 to support the church and a £100 offering to the priest or deacon are customary.

If you have any questions or special requests, please contact the parish office. We’ll do everything we can to help make this time a little easier.
